Tea Trea Oil: My Favorite Natural Cure All. and a note on MRSA

First, the disclaimer. The information in this post is meant as a guideline and to be informative only. I am not a doctor and this is not meant to be used as medical advice. I am in the health care profession and believe that there is a time and place for medicinal cures and for surgery. Please use your best judgment when treating yourself and your family with any product, man made or natural. Tea Tree Oil has been a true God send for me and my family. I have been using it for many years now and keep finding different uses for it. I am writing this post simply because it really and truly works for so many conditions and ailments and I just wanted to share the information with whoever might find it useful.

I haven't bought OTC antibacterial ointments in at least 10 years. Partly because 2 very respected hand surgeons that treat an enormous amount of infections surgically, adamantly protested the use of these ointments and in fact said they were worse than using nothing at all. According to him and his (physician) partner, these ointments actually prolonged the healing of minor and major (surgical) wounds. Wounds are supposed to be kept clean and dry in order to heal, not gunked up with goop and smothered with a band aid. Also, I have found this wonderful, all natural treatment from a plant in Australia that is used to treat infections and beyond called Tea Tree Oil.

When my second son Jack was just 1 week old I noticed a 'blister' on his itty bitty baby toe. Having worked in surgery for so many years I immediately new it was an infection. But how could this be? He was only a week old!  Being the crazy, new, paranoid mother that I was I put him right in his car seat and drove him to the pediatricians office whom we hadn't even had the pleasure of meeting yet. The skeptical receptionist/MA at the front desk suggested I go back home and make an appointment. Ha! Only a normal person would do something like that. I insisted that we see a Dr.,  not a nurse or PA immediately seeing as that it had been over a week since he'd been born and I hadn't been able to get an appointment thus far.

She saw the seriousness in my eyes and managed to find a doctor in the place. O.K. Long story short (what, to late for that?) It ended up being MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) a highly resistant infection that used to only be seen in chronically ill patients in the hospital setting. Thanks to over and mis-use of antibiotics however there is a new super bug that is spreading like wild fire called " Community Acquired MRSA or CA-MRSA"  Only a few years ago MRSA was almost always Hospital Acquired or HA-MRSA, meaning it was found primarily in long term hospital patients No longer is this scary bug confined to immune-compromised patients with surgical wounds, it is in our schools, the local gym you go to and the restaurants you eat at. In fact, 3-4 out of 5 people are said to be carriers. Meaning if you swabbed 5 peoples noses and tested for the super bug, 3-4 of them would have MRSA in there bodies.

After spending some time in isolation at the Children's hospital and frightening talk of maybe having to do a spinal tap and 2 weeks of  heavy duty I.V. antibiotics on my newborn baby we found out at our 2 week follow up appointment that 7 other newborn babies had shown up with MRSA (at that pediatric office alone) and it had been traced back to the hospital where they were all born, probably a nurse who had contact with the babies who was a carrier of the bug.

Two years later a week before Christmas, Jack had been acting sick for about a week and I noticed a lump on the side of his neck. It turned out to be a peritonsilar abscess that needed to be treated surgically. The results confirmed it was indeed MRSA and we spent 2 whole weeks in the hospital on some pretty serious drugs. They tried to send us home after a few days post-op but the 1 of only 2 or 3 antibiotics that will actually treat MRSA is so harsh my then 2 year old couldn't even tolerate it going down his throat. The stuff smelled like gasoline! So, we ended up back in the hospital on I.V. antibiotics.

This whole experience was a very difficult and frustrating time. Not only for obvious reasons like having to watch your baby suffer with such a scary infection and go through surgery and then regress back to an infantile state in his confined metal crib, but because nobody could give me a straight answer on the recovery or recurrence of MRSA. Not any of the doctors, nurses or even the Infectious Disease Control Specialist that visited us. There just wasn't enough information about this new form of the disease,
CA-MRSA.

What I was told over and over again was that my son would most likely have MRSA infections for the rest of his life. Every scrape, every cut that got infected, every chest cold and ear infection would likely be MRSA. What's worse is that eventually this bug becomes resistant to antibiotics as well and then the infections become Vancomycin resistant which means nothing will treat the infection.

This was very hard for me to accept being as that I have always been very skeptical of the use of antibiotics. Again, I am grateful for them as a last resort but firmly believe that most doctors over prescribe them and most people don't use them correctly, such as forgetting to finish the full dose which is exactly how the staph infections became resistant to the antibiotics in the first place.

Instead of accepting the fate of my son to be destined to using harsh medicine over and over which destroys your GI tract, kidneys, liver and over all health, I decided to do a bunch of research for natural alternatives. Tea Tree Oil is one of the solutions I found that it ended up working miracles for us. Silver being the second, but we won't dive into that today since I've probably already lost most of you anyway at this point.

this is the brand I use

I first tried it myself and then started giving Jack small amounts of tea tree oil topically as a prophylactic (preventative) measure. For young children I suggest mixing a teaspoon or so of Vitamin E or Olive Oil with 1 drop tea tree oil and rubbing it on the bottoms of their feet and/or under their arms near the lymph nodes. Keep away from their face and hands as small children will rub their hands on their eyes and put them in their mouth. I haven't found that tee tree oil burns at all when I use it as a face wash, but still think it's best to keep away from children's sensitive faces.

What Exactly Is Tea Tree Oil?

picture from Dermaxime Skin Care

Tea tree oil is an essential oil  from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a plant native to Australia.
Historically, the leaves were used as a substitute for tea, which is how tea tree oil got its name. The part used medicinally is the oil from the leaves.

Australian aboriginals used tea tree leaves for healing skin cuts, burns, and infections by crushing the leaves and applying them to the affected area. Tea tree oil contains consituents called terpenoids, which have been found to have antiseptic and anti fungal activity. The compound terpinen-4-ol is the most abundant and is thought to be responsible for most of tea tree oil's antimicrobial properties.

Today tea tree oil is used for many ailments from acne to athletes foot. Personally and for my family I have used tea tree oil {and it worked} for the following conditions:

  • Relief of itching and inflammation from bug bites (2-3 drops in a basin of water, soak 10-15 minutes. 5-8 drops in a tub full of water.)
  • Acne (when mixed 2-3 drops with 1/4 cup EVOO and Castor oil as a cleanser)
  • Ppsoriasis (small patch on my forehead)
  • Eczema, (mild cases on 2 of my 4 children)
  • Infections (from skin and ear infections to pneumonia. I pour a few drops of Vitamin E oil and 1-2 drops tea tree oil in the palm of my hand and simply rub onto skin. It will soak into your body and amazingly enough has worked wonders for treating almost all infections my kids have had. We've only had to get antibiotics 1 in the last 2-3 years for a stubborn ear infection.)
  • Toe nail fungus (from getting pedicures)  Mix 3-6 drops of tea tree oil in a basin of water and soak feet for at least 10 minutes, 1-2 times a day. This worked much, much faster than any OTC or prescription medicine used to treat nail fungus which is notoriously hard to cure.
  • Dry Scalp/Dandruff (mix 2-3 drops in Cider Vinegar & Baking powder)
  • Aromatherapy to treat colds and persistent coughs.

Here is an example of why it might be better to use a natural product such as Tea Tree Oil instead of a man-made chemical based one.

A single-blind randomized trial by the Department of Dermatology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Australia compared the effectiveness and tolerance of 5% tea tree oil gel with 5% benzoyl peroxide lotion in 124 people with mild to moderate acne. People in both groups had a significant reduction in inflamed and non-inflamed acne lesions (open and closed comedones) over the three month period, although tea tree oil was less effective than benzoyl peroxide.
Although the tea tree oil took longer to work initially, there were fewer side effects with tea tree oil. In the benzoyl peroxide group, 79 percent of people had side effects including itching, stinging, burning, and dryness. Researchers noted that there were far less side effects in the tea tree oil group.

A little goes a long way! Start with just a drop or two and increase as needed.

Things to consider when using and purchasing Tea Tree Oil

  • Make sure it comes int a dark bottle so the light doesn't destroy the medicinal properties in the oil.
  • Do NOT take tea tree oil orally. It is to be used topically or as an aromatherapy only.
  • A little goes a long way. Start with just 1-2 drops of oil as a soak or mixed with oil.
  • Choose a bottle with a dispensing cap that only lets a drop out at a time (like the one I use pictured above) or one that comes with a dropper.
  • Tea Tree Oil can be found at most Naturopathic and Holistic shops as well as many common stores including most Walmart's, Sprouts, Walgreen's, CVS, Whole Foods and Fry's Marketplace.

  1. Hi Gwen. This was such a powerful anecdote. It is amazing how many natural cures that are available...and how little we (collectively) know about them. Thank you for sharing your story and information about tea tree oil. I've heard similar things from other friends, and now I just have to try this.

  5. My gosh Gwen, that must have been SO SCARY. MRSA is serious stuff.

Although, I'm pretty sure your son WAS cured with vanco. I've never heard of anyone being treated with it who then carried the bug forever.

I'll have to check out this tea trea oil!

  6. Monet, do try some, you'll love it.

Joanne, it was clydamycin actually. Vanco is usually a last resort. It did cure the infection, but once you're resistant to something, your always resistant....

  7. I bought some tea tree oil when I had poison ivy last year, and I do believe it helped a lot. My husband suffers from chronic psoriasis so I think we have have found a use for the rest of the bottle! Thank you!

  8. Good info! How do you use it for colds and such (aromatherapy)? The same way as you would for infections? Thanks!

  9. Thank you for this article! And now I'm a fan of your blog and placed it in my feeder. :-) When my son was 4yo, one of his classmates scratched him on the face and within days my son's face broke out in impetigo. Rather than having him take antibiotics, which was the suggestion everyone was giving me, I decided to go the natural course (we were on a biomed schedule for ASD) and treat with tea tree oil. Yes, it stung a bit, but he tolerated it well and that impetigo cleared up so quickly! When the school nurse asked what I used that cleared it up so fast, I told her. I always tell them after because otherwise I get the are-you-kidding-me? look. She was amazed! This last year there was an outbreak of lice in his class which he contracted. Out came the tea tree oil! It was AWESOME! I mixed it with a little bit of soap agent, let it sit in his hair for 10 minutes while he played in the bath, and all the nastys were dead by the time we rinsed. As preventative, each morning I lightly sprayed his hair with a simple mist of the TTO. At school recheck, many of the kids still had the lice, but not my son. I was SO happy that I did not have to use the chemical lice-rid products. TTO is now a staple household and 'medical' product in our home. :-)

I started this blog mainly to share information and stories like this so that people know that there is not only another option than chemicals and drugs but that they work better and are better for you! I would like to post your story on my main page or my Natural Alternative page if that's o.k. w you.
Thanks for stopping by and I really hope to hear from you more.

Wow, I'm so happy you stopped by my blog because I was able to find yours! I too get a little nuts about antibiotics. We thought my son had MRSA when he was six weeks old. It thankfully wasn't MRSA or staph, but before the root problem was found he ended up going through three rounds of antibiotics. It still makes me sick to think about it because I strongly believe now that the antibiotics were completely unnecessary. Thank you for sharing this story and your knowledge on tea tree oil. I'll definitely be trying this!

  14. Man, it is just so sad that MRSA is so prevelant amoungst us these days. It was less than a decade ago when it was only found in chronically ill/surgical patients and in wounds.
Antibiotics are a mixed blessing. I wish there was no need for them at all but am glad they are around when absolutely necessary. If only Dr's would limit prescribing them and people would use them correctly and sparingly. I suppose that is like asking for Peace on Earth and Harmony amoung men. Sadly, not likely going to happen.

  16. Thanks for the info. My family and I have struggled with MRSA as all five of us have had it at least 3 times each, until we started using Tea Tree Oil as a topical treatment and in our baths. It is amazing what this oil has done for our family. We are also on a garlic extract called Alicin that can be taken orally as a pill to boost your immune system. Again, thanks for the info and keep it up! We are MRSA free for over a year now after struggling for 4 years with MRSA infections.

my 19 month old and 3 year old daughters were just diagnosed with MRSA - 3 yr olld having to be lanced and drained in the ER and placed on sulfameth and the other still in the hospital on IV vancomycin - they don't want to have to cut her. i want to try to come up with a plan for when life returns to "normal" that involves some level of prevention - though many say thats not possible - and i want to try the most natural way that could help. what exactly have people done for mrsa "prevention" as a routine within the homelife? Thanks. e

    1. The only prevention to MRSA is to not abuse antibiotics. Even then, it is so prevalent in our society today that parents, health care workers, friends etc can easily pass on the infection to children where as before MRSA was primarily seen only in terminally/chronically ill patients in a hospital setting.

MRSA is not the disease, it is the resistance of methicillin to staphylococcus, a common bacteria. Again, the over use and abuse of antibiotics ie. over prescribing and not finishing your full dosage has led to the resistance of most common antibiotics. What's scary is that in a few years even our strongest antibiotics that we have now such as vancomycin will not work on many people.

So, what can you do? Well I'm happy to report that it has been about 5 1/2 years since my son Jack was last diagnosed with an MRSA infection! Whether it be sheer luck or my use of natural alternatives such as giving him small doses of pure Silver (not colloidal silver. I like Nature Sunshine brand and Young Living) also, Tea Tree oil is a natural and very strong Anti-viral, anti-biotic,anti-bacterial and even has been know to treat MRSA according to some research and in my own experience.

I know this is a lot of information and if you have any more questions please feel free to ask or email me!

yeah I don't like the scary pic they draw out for us. i think i now have symptoms of mrsa as well - mine and both the girls in the "private" areas. waiting for my culture results. i really do want to prevent the multiple recurrences that the mds keep forewarning about. its amazing how much the mds just brush aside the issue and seem to not know what to tell us to do...i noticed they were like that back when you started as well!

so what did you specifically start doing with your son? do you put the tea tree oil and vit E rub on his feet and under arms daily? did you do the tea tree oil baths? how much oil? how often? can they build resistance to the tea tree oil too?

and whats the silver deal? i must have missed that article. will have to search it after my reply. Know anything about Ryan's (comment above) mention of the garlic pill? also i've heard people mention probiotics as a possible help?

      Delete
    3. I copied this from a previous post of mine (type in allicin in my search bar). Also, you can either put a teaspoon or so of oil (vit E, olive or jojobo are great) and add 1-2 drops tea trea oil and rub on bottoms of feet or under arms of children. Be careful not to do this more than once a day, there are some claims that high amounts of tea tree oil can be a neuro toxin. If you have older children and for yourself you can add several drops into your bath being careful not to get into your eyes.

Garlic is not merely a tasty ingredient to add to your favorite Italian dishes. Since ancient times, garlic has been recognized by many diverse civilizations for its variety of medicinal properties. The Egyptian and Roman labourers used garlic in their diet to enhance their physical endurance and in the 20th century, garlic was used to fight against the global influenza pandemic (i.e. flu) of the time.

Today, more than 5,000 scientific publications from all over the world have gradually confirmed the traditionally recognized health benefits of garlic, which include acting as an antibiotic as well as other health advantages like its anti-cholesterol and anti-hypertensive benefits.

Did you know that allicin is effective against fatal infections such as tuberculosis and MRSA?

Allicin is the most powerful medicinal compound derived from garlic and provides the greatest reputed health benefits.

Allicin does not occur in "ordinary" garlic, it is produced when garlic is finely chopped or crushed. The finer the chopping and the more intensive the crushing, the more allicin is generated and the stronger the medicinal effect.

Allicin starts to degrade immediately after it is produced, so its medical effectiveness decreases over time. Cooking speeds up this degradation and microwaving appears to destroy allicin totally and eliminate any health benefits.
*** So you should either add garlic to your meals RAW, or only cook for 1-2 minutes!
So for the most powerful medicinal effect, crush a little raw garlic and combine with the cooked food shortly before serving. **Don't overdo it - too much can produce irritation of and possibly even damage to the digestive tract. Remember too that raw, crushed garlic also has the most powerful flavour!

  18. I did not take the time to read all the comments, but I feel sure you must know that HONEY is now being used for lots and lots of purposes in clinical medicine. I heal canker sores in my mouth with it in under 24 hrs. It is used in hospitals for wound healing (google it and read). You need the New Zealand "special" honey and it's expensive but it is worth a try. I had a serious outbreak of MRSA right after I started teaching school (no surprise there), about 7 years ago; honey was not tried at that point but I did manage to resolve the infection without Vancomycin by lancing all the lesions myself and using Bactrim (I am allergic to Sulfa but can use it topically). Now if I get even a small bump I put the magic honey on it. No problems so far! Best of luck with your son's continued remission.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to share the benefits of honey with us. Honey is most definatley another one of my favorite health foods. I use it in cooking and in smoothies and also in my natural cough 'tea' for myself and my family. I have been working in the surgical field for 15 years and have not heard of it being used medicinally in that area but I will look into it for sure.

      Thanks again.

    2. P.S. it is important when consuming honey to choose a LOCAL and preferably Organic variety. Choosing honey that was made by local bees helps with allergies and digestion.

  19. HI Gwen, thank you so much for the information. I have a question. My 7 year old son has a "strawberry" wound from the turf grass that hasn't scabbed over in a week. It is raw and pussy in the middle now with a dark red crust around the outside. I believe it my be staph/msra. Do I put tea tree oil directly on the wound?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First you should wash it out as best as you can w soapy water and then dab some hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball over wound. I would pour 4-5 drops tea tree oil in a small bowl of warm water and put a wash cloth in the water and place it on the wound for a few minutes. Let air dry. Also, I recommend seeing your pediatrician.

  20. Wow. My story matches your exactly. We picked up Mrsa staph in the hospital the day our daughter was born. It's so painful and awful. My daughter spent a week in hospital with iv's. No antibiotics work they just make it worse..... Tea tree oil is amazing.

  21. Tea tree oil is also good for cold sores and herpes outbreaks. It drastically cuts down on the severity and length of the outbreak if you apply it to the spot as soon as you first see symptoms. It's been a lifesaver for me!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Tea tree oil is also amazing if you have problems with herpes or cold sores! If you apply some directly to the area right when you first see the symptoms (I put it on every two-three hours for one-two days or until the symptoms go away) you'll see a huge decrease in the severity and length of the outbreak.

  23. I have many autoimmune problems, and they just keep giving me antibiotics. I'm on one to prevent the many Uti'S i get. So, after several trips to my ER for various things, I came down with Staph on my stomach. My Dr. put me on Keflex! After 4 days of treatment, I started the wonderful diarehea and soon it became bloody. I stopped the antibiotic at once. I knew what was happening...my colon was screaming, "no more antibiotics"!!! After reading this blog, I got out the tree tea oil and started treatment. I am very optomistic this will work better. He told me to use Neosporin, which didn't make alot of sense to me! What are they thinking???

    1. Try kefir or a good quality probiotic from your health food or holistic store!!!! At the least eat non-fat or low fat PLAIN (NOT flavored which contain sugar and will exasperate your problems) yogurt.
